A Nyahururu court has set free a man who stabbed his wife and tried to commit suicide.

Chief Magistrate, Judith Wanjala, ordered the release of Paul Okato on condition that he and his wife, Sharon Wamuyu (the complainant), undergo psychological counselling to iron out their differences.

Okato, 26, had last week appeared before Chief Magistrate on attempted suicide and assaulting his wife but the Court relieved him of assault charges after Ms. Wamuyu, declined to proceed with the matter.

“The Court has considered both the complainant’s plea to withdraw the charges and the Probation Officer’s report,” noted Wanjala, reminding Ms. Wamuyu that she will not revisit the matter with the Court.

Nyahururu Probation Officer, who sought anonymity, told the Court that Okato, who is currently a student at African Nazarene University, was remorseful of his actions and sentencing would be detrimental to his studies.

“The accused has led a generally quiet life and does not indulge in any intoxicating substances. It is his wish to continue with his studies,” noting that, he was optimistic despite his difficult background.

Okato had been charged that on January 5, 2020, he had stabbed his wife following a domestic row and later tried to commit suicide at the Nyahururu Police Line where he stayed with his wife.
